My Nana’s High School Autograph Books, 1936-1937

Published Categorized as It's Genetic

Well if this isn’t the most precious thing… Did you have these? I remember getting them in primary school. We’d all practice signatures at our desks before rushing around in a frenzy, making our friends write us a message. It was probably the first time we’d distinguished between writing and signing our names, and let me tell you that was exciting!

Our handwriting, however, looked nowhere near as polished as this. My Aunt recently dug up these two autograph books that belonged to my Nana, Billie. The entries are dated 1936-37, so Billie would have been 14 or 15 years old at the time. I must have spent over an hour sitting on my living room floor combing through these. Such a dear collection of memories and window into her teenage life (and the culture at the time…). She passed away when I was a toddler so it’s through things like this I’m able to get to know her and have some of my, “What was it like?!” questions answered. I hope you find some value in these pages too…

Thanks, Nana.
