This past Saturday I went to check out the Gladstone Flea on Queen West. While i’m not an avid flea frequenter, I’d heard and read too many good things to not check out the final flea this summer. It’s a great place to shop local and meet some really nice people along the way. The girl who put it all together, Laura Hopf of Scarffaces, did an awesome job of organizing and curating this marketplace of vintage finds and handmade goods. I’d actually been following Laura’s projects on Kollabora for months so it was great to meet her in person. Big ups that she didn’t seem phased by my “Hi, I know you from the internet?” intro.
Here are some of my favourite finds. They’ve all got online shops you can peruse if you think they’re neat too.
I can’t say enough good things about this line or the designer behind it, Karen King. Apparently i’m not the only one, check out her interview with She Does the City. I like that she has a diverse product range (silkscreened PG-13 pillow cases, ‘single serve’ bookshelves, shot glasses, coasters, etc) yet it’s all easily brought together under her Said the King brand. Better yet, everything’s handmade it Toronto from responsible materials.
Laura (the event organizer) and her best friend Kimberley co-founded Limberlina, a online platform and shop sharing DIY tutorials and kits. They’re such genuinely sweet girls and I love that they’re sharing their passion for craft with the world through Limberlina. Their creativity and DIYs can get anyone excited about making. Check out their Etsy to buy kits and read their DIY BFFs profile on Kollabora to learn more about the duo.
Leaves of Trees is a line of handmade, fair-trade, all natural personal care products. I can get behind that philosophy. The minimal glass bottles originally drew me over to the booth (I’ve got a thing for glass bottles with eye droppers) and my conversations with the owner, Roohi, kept me there smelling and sampling. My favourites are the hand processed Orange Blossom Argan Oil from Morocco and the Lavender Argan Hand and Body Lotion.
Marissa of Sea Flower Studios makes a line of delicate and feminine jewellery. I loved her simple sterling silver necklaces and rings. I picked up this circle necklace on the right, which i’m sure i’ll get a lot of wear out of on its own and layered with other dainty pieces. Check out her Etsy shop and read her She Does the City profile to learn more.
